Police investigating death of Orillia resident in East Ferris

On August 15, 2019, at approximately 2:30 a.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North Bay Detachment was called to a residence in East Ferris Township to assist paramedics with a person who was vital signs absent.

A 32-year-old from Orillia was pronounced deceased at the residence.

As a result of the police investigation, Eric Champagne, age 29, of East Ferris Township, has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Trafficking a Schedule I Substance, contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

  • Fail to Comply with Probation (two counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code.

He was released on a Recognizance of Bail to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on August 27, 2019.

The investigation in continuing by the North Bay OPP Crime Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Kurtis Fredericks of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

The Office of the Chief Coroner-Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) is also engaged in this investigation.
