Police investigating stabbing incident in Midland

Victim suffered life-threatening injuries, six now in police custody

Southern Georgian Bay OPP are investigating a stabbing that occurred in Midland Tuesday morning.

At about 8:30 a.m., police were called to an apartment building on Frederick Street where they found a 53-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to Georgian Bay General Hospital and underwent surgery for what appeared to be stab wounds.

OPP Const. Aaron Coulter said police received information that a number of people were seen leaving the scene in a vehicle and received calls from the public, which led police to a residential neighbourhood in Tay Township.

According to Coulter, patrol officers and OPP support units were quickly dispatched to the area, resulting in the arrests of six people, three men and three women.

They’re being held in custody as police continue to investigate the incident. Those charged will be identified at a later time.

Police hadn’t cordoned off the Frederick Street building, but yellow crime-scene tape was plastered along a white metal door that looked like it had been kicked in multiple times. A lone cruiser was stationed in front of the beige-coloured apartment building for part of the day.

Madison and Devon MacDonald, who lived next door, said they were woken up by the large police presence.

“There were four OPP cars, firetrucks and an ambulance,” Madison said. “Two of the officers were in full combat gear.”

Added Devon: “They brought one tenant out to the building and put him in the backseat of the police car. Three of the cruisers left and we think were chasing someone down by the lake.”
