Police pursuit leads to multiple charges

MIDLAND - On Tuesday March 27, 2018 at 10:47 a.m. a uniform member of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) operating a fully marked police car became aware of a traffic violation of a south bound Chevrolet pickup truck on Highway 93 in the Town of Midland.

The officer was operating the onboard Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system at the time and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 12 with this vehicle shortly after.

The truck left the scene prior to the officer speaking with the driver and proceeded to operate in an overly aggressive manner which resulted in two separate suspect apprehension pursuits (SAP) being initiated and called off shortly afterwards due to public safety concerns.

The driver continued driving in an aggressive manner which resulted in two separate motor vehicle collisions within the Town of Midland. Additional OPP units responded to the area of Highway 12 and Hugel Avenue as the driver fled on foot into a nearby shopping plaza where he was apprehended a short time later without incident.

Investigators were also assisted by members of the OPP Central Region Emergency Response Unit (ERT), K-9 Unit, Simcoe County Paramedic Services and Midland Fire Services.

As a result of the ongoing investigation Cody Ferrier 24 years of Penetanguishene was charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;

  • Two counts of Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle contrary to section 249(1) (a)
  • Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer contrary to section 249.1(1)
  • Two counts of Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident contrary to section 252
  • Take Motor Vehicle without Consent contrary to section 335(1)

And further under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario:

  • Two counts of Fail to remain contrary to section 200(1) (a)
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit contrary to section 7(1) (a)
  • Drive commercial motor vehicle - no licence contrary to section 32(1)
  • Race a motor vehicle-Stunt contrary to section 172(1)
  • Red light - fail to stop contrary to section 144(18)

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie and will appear at a future date before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland.
