TAY TOWNSHIP - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to several calls of unwanted/suspicious persons made to the OPP Communications Center on Aug. 6, 2019 in Tay Township.
Callers in the Alberta Street and Woodlands Avenue area of Port McNicoll reported an adult male and female coming to the door of their residence trying to sell water filters and also trying to gain access to their homes through aggressive sales tactics.
Residents are reminded that certain products are prohibited by law from being sold by door to door and for more information on what is prohibited please view the Consumer Protection Ontario website or by calling 1-800-889-9768 to learn more about protecting yourself.
If you have made a purchase with a door to door salesperson and wish to dispute the sales contract you may also want to view the Consumer Protection Ontario website for some possible legal remedies.

Another scam that has surfaced in tourist towns is that of motorists being flagged down by a pedestrian on the roadside, the pedestrian then asks for gas money and asks for a ride to the nearest ABM banking machine.
While enroute, the pedestrian offers gold jewelry and or gold chains in exchange for the cash. Motorists need to be cautious of this scam as the gold jewelry may not be as real as it appears and may have no value.
The list of scams and frauds grows daily and consumers and residents both need to be aware that if an offer or product seems to be too good to be true, it quite possibly is.
