Public alerts police to suspected impaired driver

On March 3, 2018 at 11:48 p.m., the OPP Central Region Communications Centre received a call from a member of the public of a possible intoxicated driver trying to leave a private event in the Town of Midland. An officer on patrol was able to locate the suspect and his vehicle on King Street and stopped the vehicle on Galloway Boulevard shortly after the call. The officer after speaking with the lone male driver entered into a drinking and driving investigation. The male driver was transported to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment for further investigation.

As a result of this investigation, Erik Asselin, 25 years of Penetanguishene was charged with:

  • Driving while ability impaired contrary to section 253(1) (a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Driving while having care or control over 80 mgs contrary to section 253(1) (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada

His vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days and further his driver's license is suspended for 90 days under the administrative driver's license suspension and was released on his recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on March 22, 2018.
