The Rama Police Service strives to do its part to take intoxicated drivers off the roads.

Rama Police Service has recently acquired the Drager DrugTest 5000. The system is a fast, accurate means of testing oral fluid from a driver to detect THC (cannabis) and cocaine which assists the police in determining impairment.

Rama Police officers have recently been trained in the operation of these Approved Drug Screening Equipment roadside devices. They will be used when the officers have a suspicion that a driver of a motor vehicle may have THC or cocaine in their system.

If a driver tests positive their drivers licence will be suspended under the HTA for a minimum 3 day period if the impairment of the driver is not to a level to where it becomes a criminal investigation.

On Friday May 7, 2021, Rama Police stopped a motor vehicle to conduct a sobriety investigation and made a demand for a road side sample using the Drager DrugTest 5000 and the test result of the male novice driver was positive for cocaine. He received a three-day licence suspension due to presence of a drug HTA 44.2 (4) and had his driver’s licence seized.
