Shots fired during robbery of Mississaga Street residence

Two suspects were nabbed by Orillia OPP after fleeing the scene Monday night; two other suspects remain at large

The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a robbery where shots were fired in a residence in the City of Orillia.

On April 6, 2020, shortly before 6:30 p.m., police received a call reporting gunshots were heard at an address on Mississaga Street West. Several persons were also reported to be running from the area.

Through the investigation, it was revealed that 4 people attended a residence on Mississaga Street West where the suspects brandished a firearm and demanded items in the possession of the occupants. Shots were then fired in the apartment. The suspects and some occupants fled the scene and that is when police were called.

One suspect was located at a business on West Street South in Orillia after a short foot pursuit. Another suspect was arrested later without incident. Two other suspects are still outstanding, however, police have identified them. No one was injured in this incident.

Orillia OPP Crime Unit, Central Region Emergency Response Unit, OPP Tactics and Response Unit, Central Region Canine, OPP Helicopter and Central Region Forensic Identification Unit were dispatched to assist with the investigation.

Police have charged a 27-year-old male from Barrie with:

  • Robbery using a firearm contrary to Section 344(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Disguise with intent contrary to Section 351(2) of the Criminal Code;
  • Discharge a firearm into or at a place contrary to Section 244.2(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Use firearm while attempting to commit an offence contrary to Section 85(1)(b) of the Criminal Code;
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon contrary to Section 91(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to Section 88 of the Criminal Code; and,
  • Breach of probation Contrary to Section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code.

The suspect is being held in custody pending a bail hearing on April 7, 2020, via phone, at the Ontario Court of Justice, Barrie.

A 32-year-old female from Orillia has been charged with:

  • Robbery using a firearm contrary to Section 344(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Disguise with intent contrary to Section 351(2) of the Criminal Code;
  • Discharge a firearm into or at a Place contrary to Section 244.2(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Use firearm while attempting to commit an offence contrary to Section 85(1)(b) of the Criminal Code;
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon contrary to Section 91(1) of the Criminal Code; and,
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to Section 88 of the Criminal Code.

The suspect was released on a Form 10 Undertaking and set to appear on June 23, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Orillia.

The Orillia OPP Crime Unit is continuing to investigate this incident. If anyone has information they would like to share with police regarding the circumstances surrounding this incident they are encouraged to contact police at 1-888-310-1122. If you know or see the suspect or know their whereabouts do not approach, contact police. Police do not feel there is a specific threat to public safety however it is important to keep personal safety in mind when dealing with individuals involved in these types of incidents. Police are trained and have the resources to safely handle these situations.
