Over the last few hours, Orillia has been in the eye of a wicked snowstorm that has dropped more than 30 centimetres of snow on the area.
It's even worse north of Orillia. In Gravenhurst and areas north, they have been shellacked with, in some cases, more than 100 centimetres of snow in the region's first snow storm of the season.
While roads in Orillia are slippery and snow-covered, the highways in the region are worse, warns the OPP.
At noon, the OPP issued an advisory saying the weather conditions have created "unsafe roadways" between Orillia and Gravenhurst.
"Highway 11 southbound is closed between Doe Lake Road and Washago due to weather and road conditions," notes the social media advisory. "The OPP strongly advises the public to avoid travelling on Highway 11 and in these areas until further notice."
There are some reports on social media with drivers stating they have been trapped on the highway for between five and seven hours.
"OPP officers are currently on scene managing traffic," notes the advisory from the OPP.
How bad is it out there? Santa's Village was forced to close.
The OPP encourages motorists to visit the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) website, www.511on.ca for up-to-date access to road information on provincially maintained highways.
"If you plan to drive, please slow down, stay alert and stay in control. These simple steps will go a long way in reducing the number of winter weather-related collisions on our roads," noted the OPP statement.
