Two women from Brampton have been arrested and charged in connection to an incident at the Comfort Inn on Hart Drive in Barrie on Saturday.

A substance discharged into the air at the hotel which caused an evacuation of the second floor has now been identified as a bear-spray-type product.

“It’s very similar to pepper spray that police would use,” Peter Leon, communications co-ordinator with the Barrie police, said Sunday. “So, if it gets in the air it has to be ventilated.”

The two women have each been charged with mischief over $5,000, assault with a weapon, and administering a noxious substance.

Barrie police, Barrie firefighters and Simcoe County paramedics responded to a call at the Comfort Inn on Hart Drive on Saturday afternoon due to the hotel reporting a substance in the air on the second floor.

The second floor was evacuated while Barrie Fire ventilated the area. The hotel has now been deemed safe by first responders.

“At this point, the investigation has concluded,” said Leon. “Thankfully, no one was seriously harmed.”

The two women have future court dates in Barrie.
