Two suspects are in custody following a shooting in south-end Barrie, Tuesday evening.
The male victim was taken to local hospital before being transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with what police said were serious injuries. No other details about the victim have been released.
Police were called shortly after 6 p.m. to a residence on Country Lane, in the area of Mapleview Drive East and Huronia Road.
Around 9:30 p.m., police said they had two suspects in custody.
Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon called the shooting an isolated incident and said there was no risk to public safety, but added it was important to let the community know that suspects were in custody.
“This was a fast-moving situation. It is still being investigated, but we wanted people on that street to sleep well knowing suspects were in custody,” Leon said Tuesday night.
Barrie police had an area taped off in front of a home on Country Lane as officers collected evidence Tuesday evening.
People who live in the area were unnerved by tonight's shooting in their quiet neighbourhood.
One woman who lives not far from where the shooting took place said she was inside and heard what she thought was one gun shot, but thought nothing more of it.
“I was about to come outside to relax on my porch and I saw all the police. I realized I really did hear a gunshot,” said the woman, who didn't want her name published.
The woman said the house where the police investigation was focused is always a busy spot.
“I don’t know, but it seems like it is rented out to people because there are always people coming and going. There is always activity there,” she said.
Another couple who live on Esther Drive, a block away from where the shooting occurred, said this is not an area where these things typically happen.
“We walk these blocks every other day. This is certainly not an area that makes the news for this type of stuff,” said the man, who identified himself as Don. “It doesn't deter me from walking around or make me scared to live here. We were due, we’ve had an incident and police are handling it. It's still a great place to raise a family.”
The Country Lane shooting is the second firearm-related incident in the city in less than 24 hours.
On Monday around 10 p.m., police were called to a shooting in the Penetang and Berczy streets near downtown Barrie. Police are still investigating that incident, but Leon said Tuesday night “there is nothing to suggest the two shootings are related in any way.”
