Woman dies in 'chain reaction' collision when driver stops for dog

A 72-year-old Vaughan woman was killed in a three-vehicle collision yesterday after a driver stopped to help a dog cross the road.

York Regional Police were called to a collision on Pine Valley Drive, north of Major Mackenzie Drive, Thursday, June 1 at about 7:30 p.m., after the driver of a blue Mazda CX-3 stopped to help the dog cross the road, police said in a news release. A grey Ford Escape had stopped behind the Mazda when a white Mercedes travelling southbound then struck the Ford, causing a chain-reaction collision.

A 72-year-old woman, an occupant of the Ford, was killed as a result, police said. The occupants of the Mazda and Mercedes received minor injuries.

The area was closed for several hours while members of the Major Collision Investigation Unit carried out their investigation.

Investigators are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police, and to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area around the time of the collision, to please come forward.
