Do you remember barn dances at Anchor Beach?

Take a trip down Memory Lane to Highway 11, just south of Washago

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau. Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia. You can take a trip down memory lane with us each Saturday morning!

This postcard features the Anchor Beach Restaurant and Dance Hall, on the east side of Highway 11, south of Washago, circa 1950.

This Ultra Mar gas station boasted a snack bar and restaurant plus a large dance hall.

Every Saturday night during the 1950s and early 1960s, there was a barn dance. Live music was provided by the owners who had their own band.

Owner Al Thomas played alto sax and his wife played piano to a loyal following of country dancers.

Filling in several times a year was Ed Healy’s Orillia band, “The Rhythm Kings”, with Gerry White, Louis Hill, Percy Robertson and Frank Kelly.

The dance hall closed in the late 1960s. After several changes in ownership, the building was demolished in the late 1980s.
