Little Harry Candy Palace was a sweet spot in downtown Orillia

Archie Carter purchased the Candy Palace, developed his own ice cream recipe, expanded and, eventually, operated one of the best restaurants north of Toronto

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

Little Harry Candy Palace and Ice Cream Parlors was located on the south side of Mississaga Street, two doors east of Peter Street. The location at 73 Mississaga St. E. was a Liquor Store operated by Frank Gribbin before it became the Candy Palace.

Archie Carter purchased the store in 1907 and over the next few years developed his own recipe for ice cream. He changed the name of the business to Carter’s Candy Palace and by 1913 he expanded the business by leasing the adjoining premises, giving him a frontage of 23 feet.

Carter’s Restaurant later became one of the best known restaurants north of Toronto.
