Orillia's 'home of rolls and honey' dates back to 1867

Fern Resort, 'Canada's finest family paradise,' had a catastrophic fire in 1964 but the lodge was replaced in just 81 days

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

Fern Resort “The Home of Rolls and Honey” has a history dating back to 1867 on the shores of Lake Couchiching.

In 1918, ancestors and founders Jim and Mimi Pettapiece coined the slogan "The Home of Rolls & Honey." For many years, rolls made from Jim's recipe, and honey from the same apiary, continued to grace the tables at Fern.

In early 1964 family members staying at the Sarjeant Marina at the north end of The Narrows spotted smoke coming out of the resort and notified the fire department. Unable to contain the fire the main lodge was leveled.

Hiring just about every contactor in the area, the lodge was replaced in 81 days, in time for the summer opening in June.

The back of this postcard reads: “Partial view of the luxurious new Blue Horizon Living Room and Petite Fleur Dining Room overlooking the heated swimming pool and beautiful Lake Couchiching. Fabulous Fern Resort, Canada’s finest family paradise."
