Recalling the humble origins of Geneva Park (3 photos)

The National YMCA purchased property from lumber baron William Thompson in early 1900s

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

In 1905, the National YMCA ran a training centre for YMCA personnel at the Toronto “Y” Camp in Orillia, where Tudhope Park is now located.

Shortly after 1905, the National YMCA purchased the Geneva Park property from William Thompson who owned the Longford Lumber Co., and was a great supporter of the YMCA.

During these early years, summer camp accommodations consisted of many large tents. By 1920, several permanent buildings had been built, including a large dining room, a boat house and dock.
