Proprietor Jin Seto welcomes people to the newly renovated Terrace Room in the Star Cafe in this photo, circa 1950.

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

Jin Seto stands ready to welcome you to a fabulous meal in the newly renovated Terrace Room in downtown Orillia.

The Star Café opened in the early 1930s at 117 Mississaga St. E. This promotional photo postcard was taken shortly before the name was changed to Shangri-La Gardens in the early 1950s.

A large neon sign with flashing “piano” lights was installed by Annis Way signs and the “Shang” sign became a beacon for boaters finding their way into the waterfront at night.

Jin Seto was in business for close to 60 years before retiring and in 1991 the neon sign was condemned by the city’s building department and removed by the new owners of the building.

Today, the building is home to Brewery Bay Food Company.
