Session for prospective election candidates coming up

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, in partnership with the City of Orillia and the townships of Oro-Medonte, Severn, Ramara and Springwater, is hosting a free information session for potential candidates who are interested in running in the 2022 municipal and school board elections.

The in-person candidate information session will take place on July 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Orillia Room at Rotary Place, located at 100 University Ave. in Orillia. The session will be attended by representatives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, alongside municipal clerks from the City of Orillia and the townships of Oro-Medonte, Severn, Ramara and Springwater.

During the session, representatives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will present information and answer questions on various topics including eligibility to run for office, general campaign rules, election finances, and compliance audits. The rules of council, head of council, municipal staff, school board trustees, third-party advertisers, proxies and scrutineers will also be explored in detail.

“Serving the public as an elected official is rewarding and requires a considerable commitment of time and energy. The candidate information session on July 7 provides potential candidates with all of the necessary tools and information to assist them with the process,” said Gayle Jackson, chief administrative officer and clerk for the City of Orillia.

To register for the candidate information session, individuals are asked to reserve their spot by contacting Sheila Spring at 705-487-2171 ext. 2140 or [email protected]. Please note that seating is limited and that those who wish to attend must register prior to July 7.

The 2022 municipal election takes place on Monday, Oct. 24. Persons interested in running for office are reminded that the nomination period is now open until Aug. 19 at 2 p.m.
