Bleeker is among the headliners for the 10th Roots North Music Festival coming to Orillia April 18-21.

If you are wondering what you will be doing in March, wonder no longer. There are many choices in arts and culture in Orillia and area this March, so pick your poison and come enjoy!

Of course, the Orillia Concert Band is putting on a wonderful show this Saturday, March 2. It’s at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Centre and will feature wonderful soprano soloist Alexandra Teske as well as the beautiful tenor voice of Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans of Lakehead University, who will team up with her on the unforgettable Time to Say Good-bye duet.

The theme of the show is Memories from the Silver Screen, so come prepared to hear all your favourite songs from your favourite movies, including The Magnificent Seven, Bond - James Bond and Great Movie Marches which includes themes from Bridge on the River Kwai and Raiders of the Lost Ark. There will also be highlights from Évita and The Sound of Music.

Alexandra Teske’s gorgeous voice will be featured in I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady and As Time Goes By from Casablanca.

The Orillia Concert Band has been consistently drawing very good audiences for their last several concerts, so if I were you, I would get my tickets in advance, and you can do so here. They are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 60 and up, $15 for post-secondary students, and $10 for youth 5 to 18. Have a wonderful night.

The Stephen Leacock Museum opens a new exhibit this Saturday. Titled “From War to Wonders: Mapping Escapism in a Time of Turmoil,” the exhibit endeavours to show how some of the most popular fantasy novels were impacted by the First and Second World Wars. This should be a fascinating exhibit, and your ticket will also get you into the rest of the museum, as well as the other temporary exhibit, “Decoding Anne Lister: History's First Modern Lesbian.”

The Leacock Museum has really stepped up its game with these interesting, thoughtful, and relevant exhibits, so do go check them out. Your ticket is only $5 plus HST and you can purchase it in person Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday, weekly. A great way to while away some of the more blustery or snowy days of March.

Also this Saturday, a couple of local musicians have put together a beautiful night of music, Acoustics for Green Haven, to raise money for Green Haven Shelter for Women. The local musicians are Melanie Bazinet and Alex Kaye Black, and they will be featured, along with Mel’s husband Dan Bazinet, as part of the evening’s entertainment. I, The Mountain, will also be playing and there will be a silent auction to raise funds as well.

This is all happening at Couchiching Craft Brewery, with doors at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 online, $15 at the door, and last I heard, it was close to sold out, so check and grab those tickets now.

It is somehow the tenth anniversary of the Roots North Music Festival, already! This “little festival that could” has been chugging along, filling St. Paul’s Centre and downtown venues and working its way into our hearts, year by year, with great music and art, too.

It’s happening April 18 to 21 this year, and the mainstage acts are: Begonia, Bleeker, The Redhill Valleys, Julian Taylor, and Spencer Burton. Of course, there will be many more acts in all of Roots North’s downtown venues.

As part of the mainstage, there is a wonderful art market with gorgeous pieces from local artists and artisans, downstairs at St. Paul’s Centre.

You can get your weekend passes here now at the best price. The price will go up as we get closer to the festival, so commit now!

Next weekend, Dress for Success Orillia Barrie presents Broadsway at St. Paul’s Centre, in honour of International Women’s Day, on Friday. Tickets here.

Saturday, Mariposa in Concert presents Boreal, also at St. Paul’s Centre. Tickets through www.mariposafolk.com.

Feb, 29, come enjoy ABBA revisited at the Orillia Opera House, tickets www.orilliaoperahouse.ca. Couchiching Craft Brewery presents The Thunderstealers, live, this Friday. Lake Country Grill has Karaoke on Saturday.

Live from the Met presents La Forza Del Destino, at the Galaxy Theatre in Orillia, March 9 at 12:55 p.m. Don’t miss it.

Oh, and check out Cloud gallery’s new offering, Collector’s Corner, featuring artist Lisa D. Hickey. Come see more of her amazing work, in her own dedicated corner of the gallery.

Have a wonderful week and if you have arts news, send it to [email protected] by Tuesday at noon to be included.
