Less than 30 days remain until the Leacock Medal Gala Weekend, and preparations are well in hand.
This week, posters were put up for display in many downtown stores and restaurants in Orillia, including Manticore Books, where sales assistants Julia and Lillian accepted the poster, and where copies of all the books written by the final Medal contenders can be obtained.
Two major events are happening. On Friday, Sept. 15 the “Meet the Authors” and Student Showcase event will celebrate the winners in the student humorous essay or story competition, and attendees will have the chance to meet not only the medal finalist authors, but also previous medal winners and other established and budding authors. The winning students will also read their pieces.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the winner of the 2023 Medal will be announced at the Leacock Medal Gala Dinner.

The finalists for the Medal this year are Wayne Johnston (well-known Newfoundland author), Susan Juby (winner of the Medal in 2016), and Zarqa Nawaz (shortlisted author in 2015, and well known as the creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie).
