After debuting his new album, Midwestern, in Toronto and Montreal last week, Orillia singer-songwriter Zachary Lucky is launching his new collection of folk and country tunes at the Orillia Opera House on Friday, Oct. 25.

“This will be the real launch of Midwestern,” Lucky says. “I booked shows in Toronto and Montreal, but most of these songs were written in Orillia. This is where I want them heard.”

A native of Saskatoon, Lucky first came to Orillia to play the Mariposa Folk Festival. This led, in time, to a home and family in Orillia, although Lucky is often on the road, his other home.

The new album reflects this personal history and his sense of Canada. “When I first stared making records, the space of the Canadian Midwest informed the kind of songs I was writing. There’s almost a sense of emptiness in my early songs. I wanted to try and recreate that with this record.”

As well as evoking that big Saskatchewan sky, Midwestern has songs about fatherhood, Lucky’s own childhood, and a sense of wonder at the way life takes us to places we couldn’t imagine.

Lucky’s self-released Midwestern has debuted at number nine on the Canadian Folk/Roots/Blues !earshot music chart; and The Oklahoma Reviews, a U.S. music blog, says it is “an unabashedly splendid combination of songs where each lyric and note seem to consider Lucky’s journey into a life he’s spent a long time roaming towards, away from, and longing for.”

“Lucky’s own truths rest alongside storytelling. The arrangements are simple and beautiful and let Lucky’s deep voice take the spotlight,” according to the Vancouver Sun. The Globe and Mail says Lucky “sings us back home and then is on his way again,” calling him “one to watch.”

As a hardworking Canadian musician, Lucky writes the tunes, hires musicians, manages production, distribution and tours. He’s been at it for about 10 years, and is only getting stronger.

For the Orillia launch of Midwestern, Lucky is joined by world-renowned dobro player Ivan Rosenberg, and the gifted Mitch Thompson on upright bass. Both musicians appear on Midwestern, two of a total of nine musicians who join Lucky on the album.

Tickets for Friday’s show in the Studio Theatre show are available at the Opera House. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
