A Mariposa audience favourite, Union Duke, brings its explosive live show to St. Paul’s Centre in downtown Orillia on March 25.

The Mariposa in Concert (MIC) show also features James Gray and Josh Kvasnak.

“It will actually be a reunion of Mariposa Showcase winners at the March 25 show,” MIC chair Pam Carter said. “Union Duke was selected in the 2014 Showcase. In 2019, solo performer James Gray won a spot, as did Josh Kvasnak (as part of The Doozies).”

Tickets are $35 (all fees and taxes included) and are available online or at the Mariposa Folk Foundation office, 10 Peter St. S., Orillia, 705-326-3655. The show is on Saturday, March 25 at St. Paul’s Centre, 62 Peter St. N. in downtown Orillia. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

Union Duke is a raucous collision of alt-rock and twang, bringing crowds to their feet with songs from the heart. Soaring harmonies, driving rhythm, and infectious enthusiasm have defined Union Duke’s career and won the hearts of adoring fans. With three full-length albums, eight singles, countless festival stages, and hundreds of thousands of kilometres in the rearview, the band is excited to be back at it again. Union Duke are five guys, 24 beers, and a half-ton truckload of foot-stomping folk-rock.

James Gray is a contemporary version of an old-school travelling folk singer. Over the years James has been crisscrossing Canada, Europe and Australia in pursuit of seeing the world and entertaining folks along the way. James now has 10 tours on three different continents under his belt and is just getting started. James has released three albums, the most recent in 2022, New Friends That Talk Like Old Friends. Notably James was a musical guest at TED Talks held on the West Coast of Canada, and recently James has received regular airplay on CBC radio programs including Fresh Air with Nana Aba Duncan and Ontario Morning with Wei Chen.

Josh Kvasnak is fresh off his sophomore solo release, Piece of Work. A self-described folk music magnet, Josh pulls audiences in with his whimsical stories and cheeky banter. Also known as the lead vocalist of the Oshawa-based Maritime trio, The Doozies, Kvasnak delivers honest, memorable solo performances.

The Mariposa Folk Foundation’s 2022-23 concert series is sponsored by Alleycats Music & Art, Al and Amy Wallace, Apple Annie’s Café, Bell Chiropractic and Soft Tissue Centre, Cathy Cleary Design, Dapper Depot, Dentistry on West, Hog N’ Penny pub, Mary Bouchard, Co-operators; Lavender Hills Farm, Tim Lauer, sales representative, Royal LePage Real Quest Realty, and Wildflower Farm.
