An Orillia woman in her 70s died yesterday at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, after being admitted for COVID-19.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed her death this afternoon.

The woman's case was reported by the health unit on March 24.

The health unit confirmed this was a case of community transmission as the woman had no travel history or contact with known COVID-19 cases.

"I would like to express my condolences to her family for the loss of their family member," said Dr. Charles Gardner, the medical officer of health.

Gardner noted the Orillia woman had underlying medical issues.

There are now 13 reported COVID-19 deaths in Ontario, and three of those were in the Simcoe Muskoka region.

The local health unit is now reporting 29 lab-confirmed cases in the region, with confirmed cases in Collingwood, Barrie, Orillia, Springwater, Clearview, New Tecumseth, Bradford, Essa, and Huntsville.
