NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF ORILLIA
*******************
With more people staying at home as a result of COVID-19, the City of Orillia is adjusting its waste collection set-out requirements to help residents that may have additional garbage at this time.

Each household is temporarily permitted to place one bag of garbage at the curb without needing a garbage tag until April 24, 2020. Garbage is still being collected every other week. Any additional garbage bags require a City of Orillia garbage tag. There is no limit to the number of garbage bags that can be set out with a garbage tag.

“By allowing one bag of untagged garbage to be set out per household until April 24, we are helping residents dispose of the additional waste they may be producing as a result of self-isolating or increased sanitizing because of COVID-19,” said Mayor Steve Clarke.

“Please only set out what you need to; this measure isn’t meant to accommodate spring cleaning purging or home renovations. We are looking to help out those who have more garbage because of COVID-19 and may not be able to go out to buy garbage tags," Clarke added.

The City’s Waste Diversion Site and Household Hazardous Waste Depot remain closed to the public, but curbside collection continues.

We would like to thank our waste collection operators who are providing this important service during this challenging time. When setting out garbage, recycling and green bin materials, please respect the following rules:

  • All green bin organic materials must be placed in a certified compostable bag or liner.
  • All garbage must be bagged and sealed properly. Anything not bagged will be left behind.
  • Diapers must be placed out in clear, sealed bags without requiring a garbage tag.
  • Bulky items are not permitted.
  • Respect our collection drivers: exercise social distancing of at least two metres.
  • All materials are to be set out by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
  • All garbage bags must not weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs).

 Garbage tags can be purchased at the following locations (please check varying store hours):

  • Zehrs Markets - 285 Coldwater Rd.
  • Metro Food Stores - 70 Front St. N.
  • Pharma Plus - 58 Mississaga St. E.
  • Memorial Pharmasave - 1-200 Memorial Ave.
  • Duffy's Quik Mart - 55 Front St. S.
  • Pioneer Energy - 425 West St. N.

Please remember to dispose of disinfecting wipes, baby wipes and personal wipes in the garbage. Never flush wipes down the toilet. They can cause blockages and impact the operations of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Please remember that everyone in Orillia should practice social distancing and good hygienic practices at all times. You must do the following:

  • Practice social distancing of at least two metres (six feet);
  • Frequently wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
  • Cough or sneeze into your arm;
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth;
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick;
  • Stay home if you are sick;
  • If you have any symptoms, self-monitor and self-isolate and contact a healthcare professional if symptoms persist;
  • If you have travelled recently, ensure you self-isolate for 14 days;
  • If you have, or suspect you have COVID-19, complete a self-assessment, contact your local healthcare provider or visit a local assessment centre. Do not visit your local doctor or emergency room.
