Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting 15 more lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region today.

There has been a new case confirmed in Orillia, the first since April 8. The new case is a woman in her 30s who is believed to have acquired the virus through community transmission. This brings Orillia’s total case count to 11, and, of those, 8 have recovered and two have died.

There is a new case in Ramara being reported today, the first new case since April 1. This time, the virus was discovered in a woman in her 40s. She acquired the virus through community transmission.

Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for Simcoe Muskoka, has said previously there are an untold number of people infected and spreading the virus while not experiencing any symptoms. There are cases that can remain asymptomatic.

He said it is for that reason control measures such as physical distancing, hand washing, and staying home as often as possible are still necessary, even in areas where no new cases have been confirmed by test results.

“We are having an effect and we are flattening the curve, but we have to be very careful because it could all come back,” said Gardner.

In Barrie there were five more cases reported today, four of which were community acquired (including en in their 20s, 30s and 50s, and one woman in her 40s) and one close contact case (a woman in her 60s).

There have not been any residents reported positive for COVID-19 in connection to the long-term care outbreaks declared at IOOF and Woods Park Care Centre. Yesterday the health unit confirmed one staff member working at each facility had tested positive for COVID-19.

There have been 65 cases confirmed in Barrie including 31 recoveries, two deaths, and two current hospitalizations.

There are four new cases reported for Bradford, including three connected to the outbreak at Bradford Valley Community Care (two women in their 70s and a man in his 50s). There is also a new case in a man in his 20s, the transmission source for his case is under investigation.

There have been a total of 62 cases confirmed in Bradford West-Gwillimbury, and of those 14 have recovered, three remain in hospital, and seven people have died (all residents at Bradford Valley).

Innisfil has also seen a case increase with four more cases reported today, including two women in their 40s, a man in his 50s, and a woman in her 50s (travel). There have been 15 cases confirmed in Innisfil, five have recovered and one is in hospital.

Of the total 233 cases confirmed in the region, 116 have recovered, 11 are hospitalized, and 15 people have died.

The case breakdown by community (including those who have died or recovered) is as follows: Bradford W-G (62), Barrie (65), New Tecumseth (18), Orillia (11), Collingwood (7), Innisfil (15), Springwater (5), Midland (5), Wasaga Beach (6), Oro-Medonte (5), Adjala-Tosorontio (6), Clearview (2), Essa (3), Ramara (3), Tiny (2), Penetanguishene (2) for a total of 217 cases in Simcoe County.

There are also 16 confirmed positive cases in Muskoka.

In the region, there have been 77 cases attributed to community transmission, 51 to close contact, and 52 to travel.

The case rate (including lab-confirmed cases only) for Simcoe Muskoka region is 36.7 cases per 100,000 population. The provincial average is 86.6 cases per 100,000 population.
