Five new COVID cases reported in Orillia: Health Unit

The health unit reported 188 new cases in the region since Friday; One man from Barrie succumbed to the coronavirus

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 188 new cases of COVID-19 in the region since Friday. 

The health unit has also confirmed the death of a Barrie man who contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized outside of the region. He was between 45 and 64 years old. 

Included on the Dec. 21 list of new COVID-19 cases are three Collingwood residents, one Wasaga Beach resident, 30 Barrie residents, 36 Bradford West Gwillimbury residents, 17 Innisfil residents, nine Midland residents, and five Orillia residents.

The health unit notes there is a lag in the data presented in the daily updates because of an increase in cases. 

The breakdown of cases provided by the health unit is as follows. All case transmissions are under investigation unless otherwise indicated: 

  • Orillia (5): A woman and a man between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old and a woman over 80 years old.
  • Ramara (2): A woman and a man between 45 and 64 years old. The woman's case is linked to close contact.
  • Severn (3): A man between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to travel. A woman between 45 and 64 years old and a man over 80 years old – both cases linked to an institutional outbreak. 
  • Collingwood (3): Three people between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Barrie (30: Four youth under 18 (one workplace outbreak, one close contact), nine individuals between 18 and 34 years old (one linked to a congregate setting outbreak and one linked to close contact), six people between 35 and 44 years old (one linked to a congregate setting outbreak and two linked to close contact), six people between 45 and 64 years old (two community-acquired, one workplace outbreak), four individuals between 65 and 79 years old (one community-acquired and two close contact).
  • Springwater (8): One person between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old, and three people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (36): Four youth under 18, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, 13 people between 45 and 64 years old, six people between 65 and 79 years old, and two people over the age of 80. Seven cases are linked to close contact, two are community-acquired, and one is connected to an institutional outbreak outside the region. 
  • Innisfil (17): Two youth under 18, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and one to a workplace outbreak. 
  • Midland (9): Two girls and a boy under 18, two women between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old, a man between 65 and 79 years old, and a man over 80 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and one to an institutional outbreak.
  • Tay (3): Two women between 18 and 34 years old, and one man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to an institutional outbreak. 
  • Tiny (4): Two women and a man between 18 and 34 years old, one woman between 65 and 79 years old whose case was community-acquired. 
  • Penetanguishene (11): Seven individuals between 18 and 34 years old, two between 35 and 44 years old, and one between 45 and 64 years old, all linked to an institutional outbreak. One man between 65 and 79 years old whose case is under investigation. 
  • Thirteen cases are listed with location information still pending and there are two new cases in Muskoka Lakes, 11 in Essa, two from Adjala-Tosorontio, and 25 in new Tecumseth. 

The local health unit has now confirmed 3,075 cases of COVID-19 with 2,412 of those cases recovered and 59 cases ending in death. There are approximately 560 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County.

There are at least 18 people from Simcoe County hospitalized. 

There have been 2,938 cases confirmed in just Simcoe County, with 2,306 of those now recovered and 57 deaths.
