The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 123 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths in its update today - its first update since it last reported on Friday.
The new cases reported today include five Orillia residents, three Collingwood residents, 52 Barrie residents, 17 Bradford West Gwillimbury residents, seven Innisfil residents, five in Penetanguishene, three in Tay Township, two in Springwater Township and one resident each in Midland and Severn Township.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 5,993 cases of COVID-19 with 5,106 of those cases recovered and 179 cases ending in death.
According to the health unit, 153 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern UK B.1.1.7 and an additional 131 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).
There are 30 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been two new hospitalizations since yesterday's update.
The health unit has administered more than 28,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health-care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports more than 12,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine.
