A former Midland councillor and police officer has died from COVID-19.

Jack Charlesbois, who served two terms as a town councillor and previously worked for the Midland Police Service rising to the rank of sergeant, passed away Sunday.

Charlebois' passing was announced by his daughter Jill Richards.

"My Dad fell about a month ago and broke his hip," she wrote on her Facebook page. "He was on the floor of the hospital (Georgian Bay General Hospital) where the COVID outbreak started. Unfortunately Dad tested positive with COVID.

"He fought really hard for the past two weeks and it is with a heavy heart that I tell you that my Dad passed away this evening. My Dad is my greatest hero and I will miss you forever Dad I love you Dad. Xoxoxo."

A notice on the town's Facebook page paid tribute to Charlebois' community mindedness.

“Jack is well-known throughout our community for his service and support of residents in seeking solutions to their issues. Jack had many ardent supporters and will be remembered fondly."

In a release, Mayor Stewart Strathearn extended his condolences to the Charlebois family on behalf of council and Midland residents.

“I wish to recognize Jack's long-standing service to his community,” he said.
