The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a single new case of COVID-19 today.
The latest case is a woman from Essa between the ages of 45 and 64 years old. The transmission for her case is under investigation. This is the first case reported in Essa since July 22, and is the only active, lab-confirmed case in Essa.
Though there was one new case, the total number of cases has gone up by two today. The case was removed originally on July 20 "as it no longer met case definition." The case was readded today after further investigation.
The case subtracted and then readded was an individual from Penetanguishene. The person re-added has already recovered, so there remains one active case in Penetanguishene.
So far this week, the health unit has confirmed six new cases (including results processed on the long weekend).
Yesterday, Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for the region, said the reproductive rate of the coronavirus in the region is 0.8. The reproductive rate is the number of people each positive case infects. When the number is below one, it means infections are declining.
There were seven travel-related cases reported by the health unit last month and one more this month. Dr. Gardner said they are related to international travel.
An outbreak previously declared at Georgian Residences retirement home in Penetanguishene was declared over on August 4. There were two cases associated with the outbreak, a staff member, and a female resident over 80-years-old who was hospitalized and died. The health unit reported her death on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
There are no other active outbreaks in the region according to the health unit.
There was one workplace-related case reported last week, a New Tecumseth man between 45 and 64 years old, but Gardner said the workplace is outside of the region. It was included on the local case list because of the individual's primary residence address.
Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 664 cases of COVID-19 to date, with 633 of those cases located in Simcoe County.
There are 612 cases now recovered and 37 people have died in the region. The health unit indicates there are 15 active cases in the region – all in Simcoe County – and three of those cases are hospitalized.
In Simcoe-Muskoka, the incidence rate for the coronavirus is 111.4 cases per 100,000 people in the population.
