Health unit reports 32 new COVID cases in region, none in Orillia

The health unit has reported 17 more confirmed cases of the UK variant in Simcoe County

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 32 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in its update today, Feb. 12.

The two deaths reported today were both individuals whose cases are linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care in Penetanguishene. They include a man between 65 and 79 years old and a man over 80 years old. Both died on Feb. 11. 

According to the health unit, 150 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK and an additional 86 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing). 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 5,872 cases of COVID-19 with 5,043 of those cases recovered and 173 cases ending in death. There are 617 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County. 

There are 29 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been two new hospitalizations since yesterday's update. 

The health unit has administered more than 25,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports more than 9,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Wasaga Beach (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case transmission is still under investigation. 
  • Barrie (13): A girl and a boy under 18, three women and three men between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and three women and a man 45 and 64 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact, and one was community-acquired.
  • Innisfil (2): A man between 18 and 34 years old and a man between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (5): A man between 18 and 35 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 yeas old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old, and a woman between 18 and 34 years old. Two cases were community-acquired, two are outbreak-related and one is linked to close contact. 
  • Penetanguishene (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Essa (4): Two men between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and a man between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old whose case is community-acquired. 
  • There are four new cases in Muskoka: one in Huntsville and three in Muskoka Lakes.
