An Orillia man is hoping the community will come together as a collective superhero to aid those facing job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brant Mawdsley has started an online fundraiser, with money raised going to the Orillia Salvation Army to be distributed to local residents who’ve lost their jobs.
“I needed help sometimes in my life — not financial, but in other ways — and each time I needed help, it was there. Now it’s my time to play Superman,” Mawdsley said. “I’m urging people in the community to be Superman, Batman, the Hulk. We need to come together.”
He started the fundraiser Sunday on Facebook, setting a goal of $25,000. It’s been a slow start, so he’s hoping people step up soon.
“As Canadians and members of the community, we need to help each other out. This is the time, now more than ever, to come together as a community,” Mawdsley said, noting many local residents know people who have been laid off due to the virus.
“I have friends who are working in jobs that are now temporarily closed and I’d hate to see anything happen to them.”
He said he plans to keep the fundraiser going “as long as necessary.”
