The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 121 new COVID-19 cases and one new deaths in today's update, the first since Friday.

The death reported today was a Barrie man between 65 and 79 years old.

There are 473 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

According to the health unit, 225 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by eight cases since last report.

There are six active cases confirmed as the B.1.1.7 strain.

Since extra testing is required to confirm variant strains, the delay in results can sometimes mean a case is recovered before it is confirmed as a variant strain.

There are also 430 cases that have screened positive as variants (awaiting confirmatory testing to determine which variant), which is 39 more than on Friday

There are 153 active cases that have screened positive as a variant of concern.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,737 cases of COVID-19 with 6,018 of those cases recovered and 190 cases ending in death.

There are 18 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes one new hospitalization since Friday.
