A second patient has died at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) as the positive COVID-19 case total continues to rise.

An outbreak on all inpatient units at GBGH, declared Dec. 4 in consultation with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, continues.

Since beginning earlier this month to today’s report, the Midland hospital has announced a total of 38 cases related to the outbreak.

Twenty-two confirmed cases involve staff/credentialled staff cases, with 16 total patient cases.

Eight of those 16 remain in hospital while six have been sent home to self-isolate. Besides the death announced today, the hospital confirmed that another patient (a woman between the ages of 65 and 79) had died related to the outbreak. The hospital didn't provide the gender or age of the latest patient who died.

Contact tracing for current patients and staff is being completed through the hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Prevention and Control departments. Contact information for anyone who has been an inpatient (and has now been discharged) or outpatient at the hospital, or who may be considered a high-risk contact of one of these cases, has been provided to public health for community follow-up.

So far this year, the hospital has recorded 19 positive cases involving inpatients, six outpatients (swabbed via the emergency department) and three COVID-related deaths.
