LETTER: City should give area residents break on parking

'Why can't the city endorse a discounted parking rate to the three surrounding townships who support Orillia's economy?' asks letter writer

I appreciate reading the updates on the Centennial Drive reconstruction project as it was long overdue for Orillia.

I do find it frustrating, however, to read the updates on the boat launch. For years it was a free launch and thousands of boaters took advantage of that and used the facility.

I get that a nominal fee should be charged for out-of-town residents, and in 2023, the outrageous fee of $100 to park and launch turned many away, including tourist dollars they may have brought with them to the city.

Orillia is not charging city residents to park/launch as long as they have a pass, but they are charging everyone else $50 in 2024.

I wrote to the city, but heard nothing back, asking about the three surrounding townships being able to perhaps pay a discounted rate. I grew up in Orillia and now call Oro-Medonte home and contribute to Orillia's economy almost on a daily basis with shopping, groceries, vets, etc.

I know Bass Lake does not charge $50 for a day pass to enjoy the park, which thousands of Orillians have enjoyed for decades. I also believe the parking area where the old gatehouse was is free to enjoy the park for whoever wishes to go for a walk.

Why can't the city endorse a discounted parking rate to the three surrounding townships who support Orillia's economy and drive in and out of Orillia every day? Or at least respond to people who inquire.
