Letter to the editor and open letter to Santa Claus:

Dear Deflated Santa/North Pole,

I wanted to write to you today, having seen the sad state that you’re in.

I see why you’re deflated: It’s our first COVID Christmas.

My family is planning a dinner over Zoom, even though they’re just down the street. I haven’t hugged them since the beginning of March and of course that is hard.

Send strength, Santa.

I’ve been staying home a lot, lately. When I watch the news they talk about the second wave and I see the case counts going up. I do want to go buy myself some groceries and get some cashews for my dad.

Send courage, Santa.

Our downtown stores and restaurants are going to suffer again. It’s so much easier to just order online.

Send wisdom, Santa.

I’m cleaning my house and finding all kinds of clothes and things that I totally forgot about. I’m going to sell/give away and donate the stuff that I don’t need.

Send persistence, Santa.

I’m an artist and I haven’t been able to do much of my creative work lately.

Send inspiration, Santa.

You know, last week, my neighbour yelled at my dog, said he’s been pooping on their lawn. I know it’s not my dog. I built him a fence in the summer. He poops back there. He’s never out of my sight. The next day, that neighbour left me a big bag of dog poop at the end of the driveway. I get that he’s angry about poop. I put it in my garbage.

Send my neighbour kindness, Santa.

Please send the love this year, Santa. We don’t really need more stuff.
