Christmas is a time for helping those in need, whether it be food, shelter, and clothing.

Our Orillia community is generous in heart and with their wallets as demonstrated by the massive donations given to the charities that provide these essential services. A sincere thank you to the donors.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a huge opportunity for local charities to again benefit from our community kindness.

However, there is one sector that continues to be overlooked when the cheques are written — the arts and culture organizations, services and businesses. These groups provide excellent local entertainment, performances, visual arts exhibits, literary works, promotion for local artists who also are trying to make a living with their creations, and much more. You may ask the relevance of these activities in your life and I ask you to remember the solitary experience of COVID when we all tried to mentally survive with Netflix and reality TV.

I ask you to consider our arts organizations, galleries, stores, visual artists, musicians, dancers, studios, writers — whatever makes your heart beat with excitement and your soul sing with joy.

A lump of coal won’t pay their expenses. We give our best to this community to create a cultural destination that we can all enjoy and be proud of. Please consider a purchase or donation to support your favourite arts experience.

Christine Hager
Secretary, board of directors
Orillia and District Arts Council
