LETTER: How is a cat running at large different from a dog running at large?

'The bylaw should include cats. A pet is a pet and both pet owners should have the same rules,' says frustrated letter writer

I was surprised to read the city is now taking over for the SPCA for licensing and complaints of dogs running at large but have also denied anyone from complaining about cats at large.

How is a cat running at large different from a dog running at large? Dogs do not destroy bird nests and kill baby birds that venture from the nests; they also don't kill beneficial insects, but cats do. Not only do they destroy wildlife they destroy private property.

I have had cats spray my front door several times and urinate on the mat on my porch (and) they poop in my garden which I have to clean up constantly.

You see what happens is the cat owners get tired of hauling and paying for cat litter from the store so they just let them out to go do their business on neighbouring property. I just wonder how much kitty litter gets sent to the landfill.

While they are running at large they get pregnant and the next thing you know you have 10 cats running at large.

Why is the city ignoring this problem and flat out refusing to take calls on these issues? The bylaw should include cats. A pet is a pet and both pet owners should have the same rules.
