The following letter is in response to a column about Orillia’s history with alcohol, published April 13.
I think it would be a very good idea if the governments at all levels — municipal, provincial and federal — outlawed and prohibited all alcohol sales across Canada.
This would very likely reduce all different types and kinds of crimes and greatly reduce and almost eliminate crime rates and we certainly would no longer have drunk drivers on any roads, so it would reduce the carnage drunk drivers have caused.
We would certainly have a much more civil and a much more enjoyable society across Canada if alcohol was totally prohibited and people's health would be much better.
I would certainly vote 100 per cent in favour of outlawing all alcohol sales across Canada.
It is very unfortunate that the Ontario government is in the process of making plans to allow greater access to the sale of alcoholic beverages in 8,500 stores in Ontario in 2026 which will result in a 289 percent increase in the number of stores selling alcoholic beverages in Ontario.
These changes will more than likely greatly increase alcohol consumption which will greatly increase impaired driving deaths and injuries leading to increases in crimes and more increases in emergency department visits at hospitals across Ontario
