LETTER: New mayor needs to listen to all residents

When it comes to Terry Fox Circle, mayor shouldn't cater 'to any group that manages to muster up a petition,' says letter writer

Well, we have a new mayor and council. It was wonderful to watch the (inauguration) on Monday.

I found it interesting that Mayor Don McIsaac specifically mentioned the Terry Fox Circle and how many people had signed a petition to keep it as it is, so he would be doing that. It’s good that he is listening to his constituents. But what about those who didn’t sign the petition?

My wife and I live near the park and use it every day. We were approached several times by very earnest, dedicated, polite people. They did not ask our opinion. They asked us to support their cause, but we declined because we felt that council had made the best decision. Nobody asked us to sign a petition in support of that.

What I’m saying here is you can’t just take one petition or demonstration and assume that is the will of the people.

I voted for Don because he said he would listen. I want a leader who listens, not someone who defers to any group that manages to muster up a petition.

The decision on the Terry Fox Circle has been made, after much careful consideration and public input. Let’s move on to more important matters.
