I do not believe people have lost the capacity to help others. Between food banks, toy drives, charities — I see people doing great things.

I believe there is a stigma attached to homelessness. Most people automatically assume there is a substance abuse problem. (So, why give money to feed the addiction?)

Some may wonder, “Where are their family and friends?” I have often thought of this. I also wonder if there are mental health issues at play. I believe we can be afraid to help others out of fear. I wouldn’t approach a man, homeless or not. In this day and age, we have to take our personal safety into account.

I think we should have a “foster an adult” program, where an adult could be screened by social services for substance/mental health issues, even criminal history if applicable. I would love to give an adult a warm place to live, shower, eat, sleep while they get on their feet. All some people need is a stepping stone, a chance. Plus, we make friendships that can feel like family. I had someone live in my home who had aged out of foster care. She was a complete stranger. There was no rent, food expenses — just go to school and use this opportunity. She didn’t. She was selfish, disrespectful and really just wanted a place to flop. Did I mention ungrateful? She also had mastered the art of manipulation.

My point being there are so many variables to consider. People may be stretched dollar-wise but will always give if they know it’s being used properly. Just my two cents and I don’t need the change.
