My late wife, Linda, and I, along with our friends David and Penny Collenette met Queen Elizabeth II in March of 1992 on Commonwealth Day. We were the Canadian delegates to the Commonwealth Inter-Parliamentary Conference that year.

The occasion was a cocktail party for delegates and others celebrating Commonwealth Day. The Queen met every delegate. She was so gracious and interested. I have always been a huge fan of hers and meeting her in person was a special moment.

Throughout her reign she made a longstanding contribution to the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world, to both leaders and the common person.

Every day of her life she set an example of dedication to duty. On Tuesday of this week she accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and then met Liz Truss, the new Conservative Party as Prime Minister.

Some will suggest that the role of Queen has a lot of perks. True, but when you weigh the perks against the responsibilities of the job there is no comparison.

We, as Canadians, will never forget her example of loyalty to her people and dedication to duty.

Doug Lewis
