The following letter is in response to a story titled 'Poll: Most readers would vote to abolish separate schools', published Dec. 9.
The question about continuing the Catholic school system deserves serious discussion, but a referendum is not helpful, because there are twice as many public school supporters.
Catholic parents want to continue their schools simply because they have some control over them, whereas if the systems were combined, they would lose their voice in school policy.
For most parents, their reasons aren't religious but political — they want their voice to be heard.
