While reading Secret Empires by Peter Schweizer recently, I cannot help but notice the links to local politics.

I see some young people stepping up to run for local office in an attempt to challenge the status quo and our local cronyism. Mason Ainsworth and Jay Fallis may be young, but they see the people that are falling through the cracks in this system.

They are attempting to represent all citizens of Orillia. Their attempt to change things is challenging the way that things have been done for years. Many do not like it and feel threatened by change.

In my personal experience, Orillia can be a very aggressive place when you are trying to enact change that benefits the many over the few.

In his book, Schewiezer discusses a form of cronyism called “smash and grab,” which is hard to track but very real in Orillia.

It is my hope that people will get out and vote for someone that is willing to stand up for our citizens before there is nothing left to protect.

Maurice McMillan
