23 new COVID cases confirmed in region since Friday, including one Orillia resident

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 23 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths today (June 21). 

The deaths reported today include one Innisfil resident and one Bradford West Gwillimbury resident. One was a male between 45 and 64 years old, and he died on June 13. and The other was a woman between 35 and 44 years old who died on June 7.

There are 144 active cases in the region. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,222 cases of COVID-19 with 11,410 of those cases recovered and 248 cases ending in death.

There are 16 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19 related illness, and that includes four new hospitalizations since Friday's update. 

The health unit has reported a total of 4,856 variant strain cases, with 86 of those still active. 

Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern: 

  • To date 3,971 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha), 164 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern, 32 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern, 20 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, and an additional 669 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).
    • Note: all B.1.617 cases are currently presumed to be of the B.1.617.2 (delta) lineage as it is the dominant B.1.617 strain in Ontario.

To date, 383,223 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (63.4 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 99,359 people (16.4 per cent of the population) have also received a second dose. 

According to the health unit, 20 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 54 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 26 per cent is unvaccinated. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified). 

  • Collingwood (1): One person over 79 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no link discovered). 
  • Springwater (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • Barrie (9): Two youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact transmission and one is listed as community-acquired (no link discovered). 
  • Innisfil (5): Four youth under 18 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. All five cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Orillia (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as close contact transmission. 
  • Ramara (1): One person over 79 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Severn (1): One person over 79 years old. 
  • Penetanguishene (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired (no link discovered). 
  • New Tecumseth (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no link discovered). 
  • There is one new case in Muskoka, a person between 35 and 44 years old from Bracebridge. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on June 21).
