244 people in Ontario ICUs due to COVID

Limited testing captures 2,125 new cases, 2,361 recoveries also reported

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 continues to decline.

According to the report, there are 244 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-related illness. Of those, 130 patients are on ventilators. 

The latest COVID updates published by the province reported 20 deaths — 14 within the last month and six from over a month ago added for data clearing. There were 2,125 new cases confirmed through lab testing in today's report. New case counts are underestimated due to limited testing.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,119,564 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 1,090,976 recoveries and 12,638 deaths.

The March 9 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 2,361 recoveries
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 209 unvaccinated people, 47 partially vaccinated, 1,760 fully vaccinated, and 125 cases were reported with vaccination status unknown. 

Hospitalizations

  • 742 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. 
  • Of those hospitalized not in the ICU, 157 are unvaccinated, 30 are partially vaccinated, and 366 are fully vaccinated.
  • 196 people are in ICU testing positive for COVID. There are 48 people in ICU due to COVID who are no longer testing positive.
  • There are 130 patients on ventilators because of COVID-related critical illness.
  • Among the ICU patients are 47 unvaccinated people, four partially vaccinated, and 71 fully vaccinated people. 

Vaccination

  • About 86 per cent of the population over four years old in Ontario is fully vaccinated (about 12 million people)
  • More than seven million people in Ontario have had three doses of a COVID vaccine.
  • 10 per cent of the eligible population (aged 5 and up) is unvaccinated

Testing 

  • Provincial labs processed 14,695 tests for the latest report, resulting in an 11.2 per cent positivity rate. 

Simcoe-Muskoka

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported one death, 79 new cases, and zero new hospitalizations related to COVID in the last update published March 9.

There are at least 22 people from the region hospitalized because of COVID-19, including seven patients in intensive care units (ICUs).

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 36,260 cases of COVID-19 with 35,093 of those cases recovered and 421 cases ending in death.
