The residents at Atrium Retirement Residence in Orillia have been busy fundraising for the local OSPCA with an event called With Love from Betty.

Their inspiration for the idea to raise funds for the animal shelter came after watching a program on Betty White, who dedicated her life to helping animals in need. With Betty’s ‘birthday’ on Jan. 17, the Atrium residents decided they couldn’t think of a better way to honour Betty’s wonderful legacy, while at the same time helping their local OSPCA.

A local business, Cheryl’s Sweet Creations, donated paw-print-shaped cookies that read “Love from Betty” to this special event. The Atrium residents were able to raise an amazing $560 by selling cookies to their supportive friends, family and members of the local community. Everyone who purchased the paw print cookies was very happy to support such a wonderful cause.

“I was so happy to help support the animals at our Orillia shelter,” said Theresa Ethier, resident at the Atrium. “There are many cats and dogs at the shelter that need homes and with our donation we will be able to help the OSPCA care for them while they wait for their fur-ever homes.”

Laurie Brewer, sales and marketing manager at the Atrium, was thrilled to present a cheque to Carol Beard, branch manager for the OSPCA of Orillia, for $560 on Tuesday.

“It’s wonderful to be part of such a caring community who have reached out to support our local OSPCA,” said Brewer. “The residents at the Atrium were so happy to organize a fundraiser for the shelter, knowing they were helping animals in need while at the same time honouring Betty White’s legacy. We owe a big thank you to all the folks who donated money to the cause and to those who bought the paw print cookies. I was overwhelmed by the response this fundraiser received.”

The fundraiser for the local OSPCA was such a success that the Atrium will make With Love from Betty an annual event. Cheers to that. Betty White would be so thrilled that her legacy of love for animals continues even in our small community.
