Capt. John Reid, a decorated war hero of the Royal Canadian Medical Corps, survived the 1941 Battle of Hong Kong, spent 44 months under the deplorable conditions of prison camps in both Japan and China, all the while tending to his Canadian colleagues with the utmost care.

He is said to have saved hundreds of lives during his time as one of only four medical officers selected for Canada’s elite C Force during World War 2.

Join the captain’s son, Jonathon Reid, author of The Captain Was a Doctor, at the Orillia Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. as he shares the story of Capt. Reid’s experiences both during the war and afterwards, where he grappled with his personal challenges returning home to civilian life as both a hero, and inevitably, a much-changed man.

Beloved author and historian Charlotte Gray calls The Captain Was a Doctor “a story of incredible heroism and the toll it took … a poignant and moving book,” while acclaimed Canadian author Tim Cook describes the work as “a haunting exploration of a decorated hero of the Hong Kong campaign.”
