Bike fest pedals into Horseshoe Resort

Event features competitions, vendors, kids' activities; 'The courses are well thought out and with perfect conditions,' says participant

A sunny sky greeted riders of various ages and abilities at the Horseshoe Valley Bike Fest at Horseshoe Resort in Oro-Medonte on Saturday.

The event boasts a weekend of mountain biking competition, and entertainment.

There is the vendor village expo, where visitors can explore the latest biking gear, enter fun contests, and engage with cycling industry brands and community associations.

The kids’ zone keeps the little ones occupied with colouring, games and activities, which includes a rock-climbing wall.

Bike racers are battling head to head all weekend on a dual slalom course, as well as enduro events that will challenge them on hill climbs and a set of downhill courses.

Five-year-old Quinn Goselin, of Port Carling, said he likes the speed and jumping he can do on his bike at the event, though he didn’t seem optimistic about his chances in the competition Saturday.

When asked how he thought he would do, he replied, “Bad.”

“I’m slow,” he added, “because I have to hold my brakes so that I don’t get a speed wobble. I’ve had one. I fell and I cried the whole way home.”

Burke Davis, 13, of Minesing, is competing in the dual slalom races along with the downhill events this weekend.

“I came in second in the last race. I was pumped,” he said. “The courses are well thought out and with perfect conditions. There are tight corners. It’s pretty good.”

He says he wants to get more involved with mountain biking and possibly making a career out of it.

The Horseshoe Valley Bike Fest continues Sunday. A schedule of events can be found here.
