Members of the Brechin Lions Club love to golf. And they love the idea of supporting the new residential hospice that’s set to open at 1140 Brodie Drive later this year to serve the North Simcoe communities of Orillia, Severn, Oro-Medonte, Ramara, and Chippewas of Rama First Nation.

Bert Ruhl, President of the Brechin Lions Club, was pleased to present a cheque in the amount of $1,000 to support the Mariposa House Hospice annual golf tournament. This is part of a commitment from the group to sponsor the event for five years.

“Residential hospice care is so important, and we want to support having that kind of care closer to home,” Ruhl said.

In years past, Mariposa House Hospice was able to gather as a group on a specific date at a local golf club to have a traditional golf tournament with sponsors, prizes, and food. In 2019, the group was able to raise just over $15,000.

This year, due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty with physical distancing requirements, the group decided to get creative by coming up with a virtual alternative where players can choose the day and location, golf with their team of four, and submit a photo to be entered for prizes.

Annalise Stenekes, the Executive Director at Mariposa House Hospice, said “Fundraising in the COVID era has been very challenging for all non-profit charities.

"To reach the same fundraising total as last year’s golf tournament, we are hoping to see 50 teams register for our virtual event this year.”

The organizing committee has arranged a variety of prizes, as well as discounts at local golf courses for those registered in the tournament:

  • Lake St. George Golf Club - $45 tax included, for 18 holes with cart anytime during the week and after 1 p.m. on weekends
  • Hawk Ridge Golf Club - $49.99 plus tax, for 18 holes with a cart
  • Couchiching Golf Club will donate 20 percent of green fees from people participating in the tournament during the month of August.
