The Brechin and District Lions Club is hoping people will get hooked on a new fundraiser this weekend.

The club’s first annual ice-fishing derby will take place Saturday.

The club’s biggest fundraiser is its golf tournament in the summer, but Derrick Patrick saw an opportunity for a winter event.

“It seemed like we never had enough money to give back to the community after (the golf tournament), so I thought, ‘Why don’t we do an ice-fishing derby?’” he said.

Because it’s the Family Day weekend, Ontarians can fish without a licence.

“Maybe it will introduce some people to ice fishing. It’s a good way to get started,” said Lion Mark Wainman.

Registration costs $40, which includes dinner at the Brechin Legion following the derby. It’s free for kids younger than 12.

Those interested can register in advance at Brechin Timber Mart, Brechin Feed Mill, Brechin Legion or Brechin Point Ice Hut Rentals. Registration will be accepted on the day of the event at Brechin Point Ice Hut Rentals, at 10 Simcoe Rd., starting at 6 a.m.

Weigh-ins must be completed by 4 p.m., and there is $1,000 in prize money available.

For those who don’t have snowmobiles, Brechin Point Ice Hut Rentals will shuttle them out on the ice and back. To inquire about hut rentals, call 705-505-1555.

Patrick said a fundraising goal hasn’t been set for the inaugural event, but if it goes well, the club will look at increasing the amount of prize money available next year.

“I’m really hoping this first year is going to be a success,” he said.

For more information, call Patrick at 705-340-1082.
