Business wants to give Mariposa House Hospice a warm welcome

Thimbles and Things owner making quilt, selling blocks as fundraiser

Want to help Mariposa House Hospice in a unique way? A local business has you covered.

Thimbles and Things owner Sue Polera is creating a quilt with 365 blocks, and she’s hoping businesses and individuals will sponsor blocks at $100 apiece with the goal of raising $36,500 for Mariposa House Hospice, which will be built at 1140 Brodie Dr., just down the road from Thimbles and Things, which is at 1282 Brodie Dr. in Severn Township.

“I really like the fact that Mariposa House Hospice is going to be opening down the road from us,” Polera said, adding the quilt will be donated to the hospice when it opens. “It’s a good way to welcome our new neighbours.”

The quilt, which will be about 84 by 84 inches, will be modelled after one Polera made in 2016. She created one block a day for the year.

When she heard Mariposa House Hospice would be built nearby, she decided she wanted to help.

“Quilts and comfort always go hand in hand,” she said. “This is a way we can provide a quilt and raise a lot of money at the same time.”

A few businesses have already agreed to purchase blocks, and Polera hopes more will come forward to help her support a cause she feels “strongly about.”

“We’re all going to die,” she said, “and it’s nice for people to be able to have it happen in a place that’s peaceful.”

Also, she added, “some of our customers had been in hospice, so it’s very personal to us.”

The names of the businesses and individuals chipping in will be included on the blocks they sponsor.
